Provenance: Prudence and Rosalind Bliss

Literature: Llewellyn, Sacha, and Paul Liss. Portrait of an Artist. Liss Llewellyn, 2021, p.202.

The reclining figure in the portrait is Phyllis Dodd's husband, Douglas Percy Bliss. Bliss was the Director of the Glasgow School of Art, and the couple produced numerous works of rural Scotland, including the Pentland Hills.

Admiring the composition, Bliss produced an almost identical version of this painting in 1955.
