Florence, Evelyn's mother,  was a gifted and devotedly hard-working gardener. She features frequently in Evelyn’s studies of The Cedars garden,  wearing the same jacket.  She waits  patiently for Spring  filling in the time knitting. Florence thus takes on the Biblical mantle, so frequently underlying Evelyn’s work, of the partnership between mankind and the Creator: the creator promises the earth and thereby man’s survival in return for mankind’s undertaking to look after it with intelligence, industry and love.
