Provenance: The Artist's Family
The work of Mary Adshead went through a stylistic shift in the 1930’s, in response to a growing awareness of Modernism in Europe. The fact that her flat in Hyde Park Gate was let to Raoul Dufy when he visited one summer is an indication of wider sympathies that were perhaps not in accordance with her art training under Henry Tonks at the Slade.
